The U.S. Mission in Liberia is officially seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the permanent position of Maintenance Mechanic (Plumbing) within the Facility Management Section (FAC). This high-profile role is open to all interested applicants and all sources.

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing critical preventive maintenance, daily inspections, and rapid emergency repairs on major building plumbing and mechanical systems to ensure uninterrupted operations across the Embassy compound.

Position & Compensation Overview

  • Series/Grade: LE - 1210 6 (Promotion Potential: LE-6)
  • Salary: USD $19,102 / Per Year
  • Work Schedule: Full-time (48 hours per week). Mondays through Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (includes a 1-hour lunch break). Schedule is subject to change to shifts or a rotating basis.

  • Appointment Type: Permanent / Indefinite (subject to successful completion of a probationary period).
 Key Responsibilities
1. Operations & Maintenance Support (90%)
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and repairs on domestic hot/cold water lines, wastewater piping, vent stacks, storm water management infrastructure, chilled water lines, swimming pool equipment, compressed air, and irrigation systems.
  • Equipment Care: Maintain and service air compressors, fire suppression systems, commercial and domestic toilet facilities, fixtures, valves, pumps (domestic, sump, and fuel), water sewage treatment systems, solar water heaters, oil-water separators, and grease traps.
  • Proactive Inspections: Conduct daily plumbing and mechanical inspections to identify issues early, prevent structural degradation, and avoid system failures or service interruptions. Respond promptly to work orders via the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Material Management: Make precision repairs using various pipe fittings (including PVC, CPVC, copper, galvanized, concrete, and black pipe). Monitor weekly water performance and track inventories of consumable materials or spare parts.
  • 24/7 Emergency Response: Respond to emergency calls during off-duty hours when critical systems stop functioning or pose an immediate safety risk to personnel or structural integrity.
2. Logistical Support (10%)
Perform collateral duties at the discretion of the Building Engineer Supervisor, including supporting post relocations, emergency response actions, escorting, special Embassy functions, and monitoring third-party specialty contractors.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Clearance
Education: Completion of Secondary School (High School Diploma) AND completion of a vocational training program from an accredited institute recognized as producing journeyman-level plumbers/mechanical specialists. (An apprenticeship program certified by a recognized trade union is also acceptable).
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain and hold a Public Trust security clearance via a background investigation. A pre-employment medical exam may be required.

Experience & Skills
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of active experience working as a journey-level plumber in the repair and maintenance of commercial or industrial facilities. Must have verifiable experience working with PVC, CPVC, copper, galvanized, concrete, and black pipe, alongside circulating/well pumps and water treatment gear.
  • Language Proficiency: English Level III (Good Working Knowledge) in speaking, reading, and writing is mandatory to process technical manuals, understand verbal instructions, and write concise reports.
  • Technical Knowledge: Thorough understanding of major building plumbing systems, root-cause diagnosis, safe tool handling, and safety measures—including Lock-Out / Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, IBC standards, and fire/life safety codes.
  • Abilities: Ability to read/interpret layout drawings, as-built drawings, riser diagrams, and equipment schedules. Must be physically capable of working in adverse conditions (tight/enclosed spaces, high ladders, temperature extremes).
  • Digital Literacy & Driving: Must be computer literate (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) to draft logs and browse the internet. A valid driver’s license is mandatory.
