Community Health Education and Social Services (CHESS-Liberia) is officially recruiting a qualified, results-oriented Project Accountant to join its management team.

Founded to honor the legacy of the late J. Alexander Nyahn Sr. (1956–2013)—a dedicated public health humanitarian who sought to rebuild communities after Liberia's civil conflict—CHESS-Liberia is a premier national non-governmental organization. Position Overview
  • Job Title: Project Accountant

  • Project Framework: Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) Project (In partnership with PACT through the ACHIEVE Project)
  • Duty Station: Saclepea City, Nimba County, Liberia (Requires frequent operational travel to various rural project sites)

About the MNCH Project Focus
In partnership with PACT, CHESS-Liberia is executing an integrated, people-centered MNCH initiative across Nimba and Montserrado counties. Operating in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and local County Health Teams, the project acts to reduce preventable maternal, newborn, and adolescent morbidity and mortality Key focus areas include strengthening routine immunizations, improving antenatal care and skilled birth attendance, and deploying tablet-based tracking systems with frontline Community Health Assistants (CHAs) to reinforce timely clinic referrals.

Core Duties & Responsibilities
The Project Accountant holds primary responsibility for the financial management, budgeting, tracking, and donor compliance functions of the MNCH Project. Core duties are divided across the following operational pillars:
1. Financial Management & Reporting
  • Maintain precise, up-to-date financial ledger records and accounting documentation for all active project transactions.
  • Record, track, and classify all project expenditures according to approved donor budget lines.
  • Compile comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, budget variance analyses, and specific donor financial reports to support executive decision-making.
2. Cash Management & Payment Processing
  • Process all authorized payments to field staff, vendors, consultants, and third-party service providers.
  • Thoroughly verify the completeness of all receipts, invoices, and technical supporting documents prior to processing cash outlays.
  • Manage and reconcile the station's petty cash records, local cashbooks, and project bank accounts on a routine basis.
3. Budget Monitoring, Control & Forecasts
  • Track real-time expenditures against approved financial pipelines to ensure all costs are reasonable, allowable, and adequately supported.
  • Provide routine budget consumption updates to project management and assist in financial forecasting and planning.
  • Support project leaders through budget revision and reallocation workflows when necessary.
4. Compliance, Asset Management & Audit Support
  • Enforce absolute compliance with CHESS-Liberia’s internal financial controls, standard operating procedures, and strict donor regulations.
  • Organize and maintain a meticulous financial document repository to support internal and external audits.
  • Assist in local procurement streams, maintain up-to-date asset registers, and track project inventory to prevent losses.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Certifications
  • Minimum Academic Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely matching corporate finance discipline from an accredited university.
  • Added Advantage: Holding a recognized professional accounting certification (such as LICPA, ACCA, or equivalent) is highly encouraged.
Experience & Technical Competencies
  • Professional Longevity: A minimum of three (3) years of active, post-graduate accounting experience.
  • Sector Familiarity: Prior experience managing day-to-day finances, tracking grants, and compiling ledgers for donor-funded NGO projects is highly desirable.
  • Software Proficiency: Advanced technical command of Microsoft Excel (formulas, tracking sheets) and modern computerized accounting software packages.
  • Personal Attributes: Unwavering professional integrity, strong analytical skills, and extreme attention to detail under tight reporting timelines.
